Geography

    • Territory is 143,1 thousand sq. km., the country is located in South-Eastern Central Asia.
    • Country has borders with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Afghanistan.
    • About 93% of the territory are mountains including Turkestanskiy, Zarafshanskiy, Gissraskiy and Alayskiy mountain ranges and also Pamir with one of the highest mountain peaks of the world – peak Somoni (7,495 meters).

Natural Resources

    • Rare metals that have export potential. Among them gold, silver, copper, ruby, pearls, topaz, semi-precious stones, piezooptic raw materials, tin, antimony, uranium, iron, table salt and other.
    • Unique and curative spring and mineral water.
    • Deposits of coal, gas, oil, marble, and construction materials.
    • Famous deposits of Tajikistan include the gold fields of Pendjikent and Shugnan, the silver deposits of Bolshoy Kanimansur, the antimony deposits of Anzob, and the marble deposits in Vanch, Pendjikent, Darvoz, and Shahristan and others.
  • Country has more than 60% of Central Asian water resources’ potential.
  • Glaciers exceed an area of 8,476 thousand sq. km. The biggest glacier is Fedchenko. The main rivers are the: Pyandj, Syr-Dar’ya, Vakhsh, Zarafshon.
  • Large lakes are the: Sarez and Karakul.
  • Tajikistan takes first place in the world on specific indicators of water resources, and it takes eighth place in the world on absolute indicators of water resources.

Climate

    • Tajikistan is located in the most northern portion of the subtropical zone of the globe.
    • The climate is continental. In mountains, depending on the height, the climate is warm, moderate and cold.


  • In valleys and submontane plains the average temperature in July ranges from +23 to +30 degrees Celsius. In January it varies from –1 to +3 degrees Celsius.
  • Annual precipitation ranges from 150 – 300 millimeters.
