Capital
- Dushanbe is one of the most developed economic and cultural centers of Central Asia with population of 679,4 thousand of people (for January 1, 2008). The city is located in the Gissar valley 750 - 930 meters above the sea level and occupies 124,6 sq.km.
- The Varzob river cuts Dushanbe in half from North to South that after merging with the Luchob river forms the Dushanbinka river.
- The average air temperature in January is +1 degree Celsius and in July is +28 degrees Celsius.

Population and Language
- On January 1, 2008 года population of Tajikistan was 7, 2157 mln. people. 26,3% of the population was urban and 73,7% was rural. The average population density was 48,4 people per 1 square km.
- 679,4 thousand people were living in the capital city, Dushanbe, 2579,3 thousand people were living in Khatlon oblast, 2132,1 thousand people were living in Soghd oblast, 1606,9 thousand people were living in the regions of the Republican Subordination, and 218 thousand people were living in Gorno - Badakhshanskaya Autonomous Oblast.
- Representatives of 120 nations are living in Tajikistan. The national population structure is composed of 80% Tajiks, 15,3%, Uzbeks, 1,1%, Russians, and 3,6% other nationalities.
- The country uses the following languages: Tajik (state), Russian and Uzbek.
- During the last years due to the expansion of international organizations English has been gaining popularity.
Administrative Structure and Political Structure
- The Republic’s administrative structure consists of the capital city Dushanbe, Gorno-Badakhshanskaya Autonomous oblast (GBAO), Soghd and Khatlon oblasts, and Regions of Republican Subordination (RRS).
- In general, Tajikistan has 62 regions, 23 towns, 54 villages and 367 rural djamoats.
- Tajikistan is a Parliamentary Republic. According to the Republic of Tajikistan’s Constitution, the supreme legislative and representative body of country is Parliament (Madjlisi Oli) that consists of an upper chamber (Madjlisi Milli) and lower chamber (Madjlisi Namoyandagon).
- The Parliament is elected for 5 years. Republic’s supreme executive body is the Government of Tajikistan, and it is led by the Chairman of the Government who is the President of the country. The President of the Republic of Tajikistan is elected for seven years by popular vote.
- The Government of the Republic consists of the prime-minister, his deputies, ministers, chairmen of the state committees.
